Although Annabelle Grayson was introduced to readers in Alexander's "Rekindled", this second novel in her new historical series can be read as a standalone. Former prostitute Annabelle finds herself suddenly a widow and unable to rebuild her new life in the town of Willow Springs, where everyone knows about her past profession. So she decides to head up to Idaho and hires trail guide Matthew Taylor, a man with his own demons, to help her get there. Alexander's intelligent portrayal of an unlikely heroine in the CF genre is a refreshing break from traditionally pious female leads. And the author's technical skills and realistic plots lack the corny, too-pat features of some inspirational romances. Highly recommended for public libraries. The author lives in Colorado.
