When Arwen's brother appears at their door, admitting he's deserted the army and that enemy soldiers are on his tail, she thinks this is finally it: she and her family are being driven from the kingdom of Garnet by the war. But when she's accidentally captured by the Onyx soldiers and they discover her incredible healing magic, she's able to negotiate. Let her family escape, and she'll go with them willingly. Soon a captive healer in the dark Onyx castle, she finds herself at odds with the brooding, unexpectedly intriguing Kane, who might just be her fiercest protector--if he doesn't decide to kill her first. This breakout TikTok romance plays on a lot of favorite tropes of fantasy-romance fans: the dark, tortured prince, the enemies-to-lovers plotline, the banter, the reckless girl heroine with a tendency to bite off more than she can chew. While the world building and the intricacy of the plot sometimes stumble, and some of the twists are predictable, lovers of the genre will enjoy the simmering tension between Kane and Arwen and will want to see where it goes next.
