The fourth in Delany's Klondike Mystery series is a madcap romp through the mud of 1898 Dawson City.

Book Four of the Klondike Mystery Series by Vicky Delany!

The year is 1898. The place is Dawson City, Yukon. A man staggers out of the dusk to collapse at the feet of a startled Fiona MacGillivray, shattering the peaceful calm of a warm July night. Before breathing his last, he gasps two words: "MacGillivray, Culloden." Fiona doesn't know the man and she would prefer not to find out why he linked her name with the "bloodiest of all battles."

As international intrigue abounds and handsome Corporal Richard Sterling of the NWMP searches for the murderer, Fiona's son Angus takes a job as a photographer's assistant, a new dancer almost causes a riot, and Fiona tells herself she is not at all bothered by the amount of attention Richard Sterling is paying to the pretty and charming photographer, Miss Eleanor Jennings.

This is the latest installment of the Klondike Mysteries, starring Fiona MacGillvary. The first three books of the Klondike Mystery series are Gold Web, Gold Fever, and Gold Mountain.

Delany takes readers to Dawson City, Yukon, in 1898. The gold rush is in full swing, and the town is home to a colorful collection of prospectors, madams, saloon keepers, and the Mountie squad that tries to keep order. Fiona MacGillivray, hard-working proprietor of a dance hall and single parent to 12-year-old Angus, is trying to lead a respectable life. Then a man collapses at her feet in the alley outside her saloon. She stops to help him and hears his last words, Macgillivray, Culloden. She has no idea why he has linked her name with that of a battle that took place in eighteenth-century Scotland. Meanwhile, a photographer, Eleanor Jennings, has arrived from Chicago, a Russian count with a love of gambling is hanging around the saloon, and a magician appearing in Fiona's variety show may be up to something unsavory. There's a lot going on, to be sure, but Delany stitches it all together skillfully, delivering a satisfying historical mystery filled with action and humor and starring a strong female protagonist.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
