Embrace your inner goblin! Learn to decorate, dress, craft, forage, and live according to the goblin principles of community, diversity, and joyful mess.
Do you ever feel strange, gross, chaotic, underappreciated, or like you don’t quite fit in? Great news: you might be a goblin! That means your imperfections and idiosyncrasies are the most awesome things about you, and you can build a more harmonious life by accepting and honoring them—taking inspiration from the frogs, fungi, moss, rocks, and dirt that goblins love.
Goblin Mode includes life advice for celebrating physical and mental diversity, rejecting prejudice, and generally hanging on to a little joy. Can a mushroom give you fashion tips? Can a snail teach you to be a happier person? You bet they can—and in this book you’ll also learn to:
  • Create a moss garden for your lair
  • Grow and use medicinal plants
  • Forage for berries (even in the city)
  • Mend your cozy sweaters
  • Display your cool rock collection
  • And more!

  • Featuring 25 whimsical illustrations by Marian Churchland, Goblin Mode will help you rethink your relationship with your self, your home, your community, and the earth.

If the world feels like too much, if the constraints of good taste and style get you down, goblincore might be for you. Goblincore is an ethos full of mushrooms, moths, and mud, where things are homemade rather than bought, where ""the good, the weird, and the sticky"" are celebrated. Goblin Mode is the guide to living your best goblin life, with crafts, wardrobe suggestions, and instructions for foraging (though Coyle actively discourages foraging for mushrooms; it's too dangerous unless you're an expert). The book describes the Goblin Code (See Beauty Everywhere; Embrace Your Weirdness; Get Cozy) and offers directions on turning your home into a cozy, nature-inspired goblin lair. Goblincore may sound silly, but as a philosophy, it's about ""making space for your weirdest, soggiest, most unspeakable needs and wants. It's about realizing that even when you're feeling sad and slimy, you still deserve a place in the world."" For readers who think Marie Kondo is too spare and hygge is too cute, Goblin Mode could be the lifestyle they're looking for.

The aesthetic known as goblincore (not to be confused with cottagecore) is complicated to convey to those who are unfamiliar with the concept. This guide by Literary Hub Engagement Editor Coyle pulls together all the different aspects of the goblin culture--community, diversity, proud weirdness, joyful mess--and organizes them into independent how-to sections ranging from creating and wearing comfortable clothing to foraging for food. The text is inclusive for all bodies and genders by offering several options per discussion instead of just one. The book also supports sustainability, including it where appropriate. There are cute goblin character illustrations throughout the guide, which may make readers wish there were some finished pictures/illustrations of the do-it-yourself projects. Among all the tips, projects, and pop culture references is a sense of comfort and the encouragement to find one's individuality amid society's conformity. VERDICT This guide to an aesthetic popular among millennials, zillennials, and Gen Z is perfect for the community. Readers will come away with many new home environment ideas and a better understanding of how they feel about themselves.--Elizabeth Chandler
